 BONELA LEGAL AID PROGRAMME SELECTION CRITERIA FOR 2015

 BONELA-Legal-AidFrom 2011 to 30th September 2014 BONELA partnered with the Government of Botswana through the Attorney General’s Chambers to pilot the Legal Aid Botswana Project. This partnership gave BONELA an opportunity to reach out to eligible clients with general legal matters that are not necessarily related to HIV/AIDS or health to have access to legal services.

The Attorney General‘s Legal AID project came to an end in September 2014. Due to this, the organization would not be able to continue providing legal aid services broadly. This then has necessitated BONELA to review her current legal aid operational strategy and came up with a criteria that will ensure that ONLY those cases that are related and support the achievement of our mandate will be prioritized for legal aid in 2015 going forward. This way, BONELA will stay relevant and in course with its vision, mission and to align her legal provision to current donor expectations.

As there had been an expectation created to the public about our legal work, those cases that would not necessarily fit into the new criteria will still be consulted as maybe necessary, documented and referrals made to other civil society organization and the Legal Aid Botswana (LAB) where appropriate for further assistance.

BONELA Legal Aid Programme will only accept the following matters in 2015;

  1. 1.Violations relating to HIV/AIDS;
  2. 2.Sex Worker violations
  3. 3.Lesbians Gays Bisexual Transgender Intersexed matters
  4. 4.Gender Based Violence
  5. 5.Children’s rights issues
  6. 6.Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights; eg botched surgeries
  7. 7.Prisoners’ matters

Upon reporting of such matters to BONELA an assessment shall be done on such cases. Those cases that may not fit into our new case management criteria will be referred to our partner organization and the Legal Aid Botswana.

The Legal office consults on Mondays and Wednesdays from 0900am to 1630hrs. We however treat matters based on their urgency and will not turn away any client if they turn up on a non consultation day. However the public is encouraged to utilise the set days for consultations.
