Action Research in Action

Since its inception, BONELA has been engaged in action-oriented research on themes relating to human rights and HIV in Botswana. These activities are aimed at increasing awareness and lobbying for change.

BONELA’s ongoing research activities include conducting studies on HIV issues related to: human rights; developing training materials; carrying out literature reviews and authoring articles for domestic and international publications; collecting data; conducting interviews and focus groups; publishing documents on topical themes; representation on committees and advisory groups; and, contributing to domestic and international conferences.

Human Rights Training Manual

In late 2005, BONELA completed its most comprehensive research project to date: Human Rights and HIV: a Manual for Action. This fourteen-module, bilingual (English and Setswana) resource and training manual is the first of its kind in Botswana, addressing a wide range of topics such as: basic facts about HIV/AIDS, understanding human rights concepts, and the right to health, confidentiality and testing, children, gender issues and inheritance and wills. This manual is being used in our training programme with the goal that stakeholders are able to provide HIV/AIDS-related services with consideration of the human rights of their communities.

Other training materials developed recently include:

  • Resources for the Botswana-Baylor Children’s Clinical Centre of Excellence on ethics, law and human  rights in the context of paediatric HIV care
  • Workshop materials on gender, human rights and HIV

HIV and Confidentiality

In collaboration with the Washington, DC-based POLICY Project, BONELA conducted research on the attitudes, behaviours and practices of health care practitioners on confidentiality with respect to HIV testing in voluntary counseling and testing centres, hospitals, clinics, and health posts in Botswana. Research was carried out in 2005. The field work and data collection were coordinated by BONELA including supervision of the five researchers and research assistants. The findings were presented at a national stakeholders’ meeting in February 2006.

Publications

BONELA’s research has been published internationally in the Canadian HIV/AIDS Legal Review and Harvard’s Health and Human Rights Journal among other publications. BONELA also comments on and reviews legislation and policies.
